<p><strong>Building Strong Foundations With Early Literacy Screening</strong></p><figure class="image image-style-align-left image_resized" style="width:30.03%;"><img src="/images/d5939654-f76c-45fd-9953-e875b5791a3b" alt="Early Learning Dec2025"></figure><p>School District 22’s Early Literacy Profile (ELP) provides teachers with a comprehensive screening tool for assessing and supporting early literacy development in Kindergarten through Grade 3. Its primary goal is responsive, data-driven instruction that meets the diverse needs of learners by identifying essential skills and guiding targeted interventions. With components that target oral language, phonological awareness, alphabet knowledge, and phonics, data gathered supports the creation of studentcentered goals and allows for progress monitoring throughout the year.<br>The ELP has been implemented in stages to strengthen early literacy practices within Kindergarten to Grade 3 contexts. In 2021/22, there was a focus on building systemic coherence with foundational literacy concepts through a series of professional learning sessions. The following year, Kindergarten and Grade 1 teachers piloted the ELP at Alexis Park and Harwood, and feedback guided revisions. By 2023/24, all K–1 teacher completed professional learning, implemented screening, and entered data into EdPlan. Grade 2 teachers joined the process in 2024/25, and Grade 3 teachers completed the rollout this&nbsp;<br>Fall. A phased approach has allowed consistency across grades and supports strong literacy foundations for every learner.<br>The ELP data also informs school-wide literacy goals, helping teams align strategies and resources, and monitor progress toward improved outcomes for all students. The Learning Department continues to support this work through both classroom and whole school residencies, as well as supporting teaching staff during curriculum and professional development sessions.</p>

<p><strong>School Play, Winter Concert, and Cancer Fundraiser</strong></p><p>December has brought the school play to WL Seaton, and “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe,” is currently featuring two casts and running from December 2nd to 19th. The Winter Band Concert is also scheduled for the 17th at the Performing Arts Centre. Seaton also hosted a Block Out Cancer volleyball fundraising event this month, which served as a capstone project for two students and raised over $2,000 for the BC Cancer Foundation.</p><figure class="image"><img src="/images/36552c85-56d5-4dae-84a3-b9c29dfb014e" alt="SWLS Dec20251"></figure>

<p><strong>Creativity, Collaboration, and Musical Excellence</strong></p><p>Alexis Park Elementary School continues to illustrate excellence through creativity, collaboration, and academic achievement. The Grade 7 band program stands out for promoting musical development, discipline, and teamwork. Students dedicate significant time to practice, and their performances are a source of pride for the school community. Individual music achievements are also celebrated, such as a recent solo performance by a student that highlighted her confidence and courage. Classrooms at Alexis Park are dynamic and inclusive, where hands-on activities encourage curiosity and problem-solving. <p><strong>Strengthening Literacy Through UFLI</strong></p><p>Mission Hill teachers continue to ensure student success through literacy development. Grades 1–3 are regularly integrating UFLI lessons, a foundational program for building strong reading skills. Grades 4 and 5 are also using <a href="https://ufli.education.ufl.edu/foundations/">UFLI </a>strategies to bridge gaps and ensure every student becomes a confident reader. During lessons, students are engaged in oral, written, and visual communication activities. UFLI addresses BC’s Core Competencies by embedding communication, thinking, and personal/social skills into daily literacy instruction.</p><figure class="image"><img src="/images/4b2605d0-dd6a-494f-adc4-b2ab36828d3b" alt="EMHS Dec2025"></figure>

<p>Cherryville Elementary had a successful turnout for student conferences in October. Students shared their personal learning goals with their families, and teachers supported each child by discussing their individual paths forward. The grade 2/3/4 class engaged in outdoor learning, exploring chemical reactions with baking soda, vinegar, and balloons, which strengthened their understanding of scientific concepts. The grade 5/6 class created carnival games using everyday materials for the Cherryville family Halloween party at the hall. The event was well attended, and students demonstrated leadership by sharing their games and teaching younger children, connecting to the Applied Design, Skills, and Technologies (ADST) curriculum in the process.</p><p><img class="image-style-align-left image_resized" style="width:56.05%;" src="/images/b808e80b-190f-4624-835a-273f2cc54c96" alt="ECVS Nov2025"></p>
